SANDGROUND, JACK HENRY

SANDGROUND, JACK HENRY (1899–1976), U.S. parasitologist. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, he went to the U.S. in the early 1920s. Sandground's research dealt with a wide variety of parasitic problems, especially those involved with the helminths. His investigations of the worms included their biology and taxonomy, as well as problems concerned with immunity and chemotherapy. He served as a member of many scientific expeditions. Sandground carried out research on the nutrition of protozoa, immunology against poliomyelitis, and the detoxication of arsenicals and other drugs utilized in treating neurosyphilis and various tropical diseases.
